While you can do a lot to ensure your oral health by brushing and flossing each day at home, preventive adult dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar which can cause cavities, bone loss, and periodontal disease. Tooth scaling, polishing and debridement performed during preventive adult dental cleanings remove tartar buildup and help to prevent many of the oral health issues in adults.

Prevention of Gingivitis

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common gum disease in adults. Symptoms of gingivitis may include swollen gums, gum irritation, and the symptoms may not be noticeable at all. In more severe cases you may have bleeding from the gums, receding gums, and puffy gums. Just brushing and flossing can’t remove the tartar and plaque buildup under the gum line. Plaque and tartar develop naturally in your mouth from the starches and sugars in the foods you eat and the beverages you drink. This plaque and tartar on the teeth and under the gum line can also lead to tooth decay and cavities. With regular dental cleanings the plaque and tartar are removed and your risk of gingivitis is greatly reduced.

Dental Cleanings

If you keep up with brushing and flossing at home dental cleanings are usually an easy procedure. Even if it has been a while since you’ve had a dental cleaning this procedure can still be painless and stress free with today’s dental practices. During your preventive visit your doctor will discuss your medical history, examine your mouth and teeth, take x-rays, and evaluate your gum tissue and teeth. During your visit plaque and tartar will be removed, stains will be removed, and your teeth will be polished. You may also elect to have a fluoride application and sealant applied to your teeth during your preventive visit.
